It seems like every room we finish, or are close to finishing becomes my new favourite room but this one really is one of my favourites <i>(shhh don't tell the others)</i> because it's our bedroom. I had very little to do with the transformation of this one since my future hubs did all the ripping out of the old features and the new additions which you'll see in a little bit.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcXCL7gJa5JceHLre2tIdbYKUyZjbMb71Y_VwExAmsxZTXa1RyP5XtzDoNKgmhdJ92MJFGjB2vZoAPxGHxK_peu4JELiDIlw6Ef7AgIIIQQXVCBtJIjDifWHs_HGTN3s8YVVIdnQEtHT0/s1600/bedroom-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcXCL7gJa5JceHLre2tIdbYKUyZjbMb71Y_VwExAmsxZTXa1RyP5XtzDoNKgmhdJ92MJFGjB2vZoAPxGHxK_peu4JELiDIlw6Ef7AgIIIQQXVCBtJIjDifWHs_HGTN3s8YVVIdnQEtHT0/s1600/bedroom-1.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After removing all the fitted features we didn't want we had some electrical sockets and a trench dug into the chimney breast so we could hang a TV without having to worry about hiding wires and since this was going to need re-plastering also took the opportunity to chip off the badly plastered area of the old fireplace. After the re-plastering it was time to start rebuilding the room.</div>

We really love the look of paneled walls and since this room although actually quite large didn't really feel all that special we thought it was a great candidate for panel treatment. Around about the time we were due to start this room I came down with a horrible cold and retreated to bed so future hubs get's all the credit here as I didn't even see it until it was finished and painted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrBzOiEbSChohdPgZGYdnVEVvmqWaxJjFW-OYTqhYdBwkFtaMb-xkaaEt1P1wHFdkAmlBQ7gCL2Kpi0yz72749Xp-bO-NLf-bUW-8T64YXElTnX6Vu4XfjuS3Pmp9apb6PC4VA2IwgD0w/s1600/bedroom-3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrBzOiEbSChohdPgZGYdnVEVvmqWaxJjFW-OYTqhYdBwkFtaMb-xkaaEt1P1wHFdkAmlBQ7gCL2Kpi0yz72749Xp-bO-NLf-bUW-8T64YXElTnX6Vu4XfjuS3Pmp9apb6PC4VA2IwgD0w/s1600/bedroom-3.png" /></a></div>
Before starting we had played around with different combinations and sizes by using masking tape, which can be time consuming but it is worth doing as the layout we originally had thought we wanted just didn't really work with the room. After the design it was time to start the measuring out and cutting which probably took the longest time of all the stages for this room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBKUJFgu-tMPS1-Gc6rJ2RXot8zz37quGKgQaGtIdQ1jjcOFPGFS37x0FQlg8r32sWPOGkt3gs5P7ub_UaGAd_YS_9fs1wPF9ql_Mt58bel-pV8hPOMW-hlI7_8SeUFzDE5fSqVbFmSdE/s1600/bedroom-4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBKUJFgu-tMPS1-Gc6rJ2RXot8zz37quGKgQaGtIdQ1jjcOFPGFS37x0FQlg8r32sWPOGkt3gs5P7ub_UaGAd_YS_9fs1wPF9ql_Mt58bel-pV8hPOMW-hlI7_8SeUFzDE5fSqVbFmSdE/s1600/bedroom-4.png" /></a></div>
The moldings which make the panel frames are plaster and are fixed to the wall with a plaster of paris mix and a few small nails to keep the plaster pieces in place while the "glue" dries, the nails are removed later so don't drive them all the way in. Another really important tip for doing this type of work is to coat the back of the plaster moldings with PVA glue otherwise the plaster sucks up all the moisture from the plaster of paris gluing mixture making it stick to the wall too quickly and giving you no time to wiggle into the correct position.<br />

After the wall panels were finished the walls were papered with lining paper and ready to be painted, since this is new plaster work it does need a "wash coat" first which is basically a watered down base coat. You could use plain white paint or the colour you intend to use, the "wash coat" is basically used to reduce the amount of coats needed to cover the new plaster as it will as without it it will absorb more paint.<br />
The final paint for this room we have chosen is Farrow & Ball Elephant's Breath which has helped create a really luxurious yet comfortable, cosy feel perfect for a bedroom, we're going for a Hollywood Regency look in this room so we added a Gold Mercury Glass Chandelier from BHS.<br />

Renovator's Funk is not the latest dance craze sweeping the nation but that stage you hit when in renovations where it all starts to get a little much, you've had the excitement of tearing down and seeing all the possibilities, you've done the hard decisions and the late night internet sourcing scavenger hunts and now you've reached the stage where it's not done yet and you can hardly stand to look at it.<br />
<br />
I'm there. <br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong I love the house, I'm just going to love it a whole lot more when it's not half done, dusty and dirty. Right now the renovation is at the stop and start period a number of rooms are close to finished but are waiting on things happening in other rooms before they can progress or waiting on deliveries or just waiting.<br />
Tomorrow we're having our bedroom carpet put down it was due earlier this week but was cancelled as when the fitter went to collect it they discovered it was damaged, once the carpet is down we have the unenviable task of carrying the bedroom up four flights of stairs, anyone want to trade places?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1623979223559608797.post-48655941166038230142013-05-23T11:13:00.000+01:002013-05-23T11:13:02.793+01:00Dressing up an archway<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Just a really quick post today to show you what we did with our really plain Archway in the Entrance Hall. As you can see it really doesn't get any plainer than this but that's no reason to ignore it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfvCBU4Vn7sli0Dg0YJZbQw2Gg_tEPJycZ75FuAjmzPl9KU81lJ9ncA5ODnFPOy1xdMMtRwSgZH2o-eU59qHjpzyFuN69AMPlT2xRDfiHTr50u4cMTsymSKDyrYQh4L8numJqftcsdViM/s1600/Hallway-Arch-Before-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfvCBU4Vn7sli0Dg0YJZbQw2Gg_tEPJycZ75FuAjmzPl9KU81lJ9ncA5ODnFPOy1xdMMtRwSgZH2o-eU59qHjpzyFuN69AMPlT2xRDfiHTr50u4cMTsymSKDyrYQh4L8numJqftcsdViM/s1600/Hallway-Arch-Before-2.png" /></a></div>
While surfing the web for inspiration around the house I came across the picture at the top of this post, I love the clean line and how elegant it looks I showed my other half and he liked it too so it was set this was what was happening on the Archway.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6foejgxXhkgnSHQ84clpZZIIAkOF2oZJrmSudO591u-5N1BXdoLCnSZ9mNjY-Y3C9f5mkAnzPg12TOiRszxLlpk5ROaL1b0ObCFRWp-wb2UdT4-hWEslfRy-JKzpjY83NbzB-T3eZhcY/s1600/Hallway-Arch-Before.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6foejgxXhkgnSHQ84clpZZIIAkOF2oZJrmSudO591u-5N1BXdoLCnSZ9mNjY-Y3C9f5mkAnzPg12TOiRszxLlpk5ROaL1b0ObCFRWp-wb2UdT4-hWEslfRy-JKzpjY83NbzB-T3eZhcY/s1600/Hallway-Arch-Before.png" /></a></div>
<br />
Again with the help of the web we located a company nearby that makes plaster mouldings and were able to custom make and build the design on site it did take a little bit of time (3 days in all) but I love the final result and think just that little bit of detail really lifts the whole hallway.<br />

<i> </i>As the heating needed some work anyway we decided to remove the two small radiators either side of the bay window since they would be an obstruction when placing furniture. The one remaining radiator on the opposite wall was no longer sufficient to heat the room by itself so that was replaced that with a larger model which will be hidden by the sofa later. A really obvious tip would be if you are undertaking any electrical or heating work prepare for mess, a lot of mess.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgOJFcM3uxBrs7z7lI68P6beWrRaOgy_G4Jla2O9HfdaEQblnprVOgyIoqHSH1-DBlxvOCZZhnWFQtJJTK0H2v2VxKmp-ghwTWPRecULEF_wiBJ-1o9IAW05ctbNDE4EXLfIJhuTOEC0E/s1600/Gray-Room-1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgOJFcM3uxBrs7z7lI68P6beWrRaOgy_G4Jla2O9HfdaEQblnprVOgyIoqHSH1-DBlxvOCZZhnWFQtJJTK0H2v2VxKmp-ghwTWPRecULEF_wiBJ-1o9IAW05ctbNDE4EXLfIJhuTOEC0E/s1600/Gray-Room-1.png" /></a></div>
<br />
We had picked a slightly textured silver gray wallpaper but after applying it to the wall the edge's kept lifting no matter how much attention you gave them and and those that did finally stick were very obvious so we decided to scratch that idea and go back the drawing board.<br />
<br />
A unique feature in room is that is has two wiring points for light, originally these both just had a pendant light with a simple paper shade and as we have re-wired the house it was suggest a few times that maybe we should get rid of the two light fittings and have one central light.<br />
We decided to keep the two lights since it's a little quirky and just gives the room that something a little bit different. For the light fixtures we found some absolutely gorgeous chandeliers from BHS in gun metal coloured crystal and they look amazing if I do say so myself keeping the two lights was definitely the right choice for this room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRJqZRRSK4sUcEopbNUUqFtQZORnLw67aktFarNSziuMB_cMrnOaOSurfL1QgNL53hpzDXu8S4hXR5Xcnu4aiccqBwuK1lG04UzqPopR1nGi6avnhRfKWDig-3wAreko4bigRJv2w-GTw/s1600/Gray-Room--Chandelier-BHS-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRJqZRRSK4sUcEopbNUUqFtQZORnLw67aktFarNSziuMB_cMrnOaOSurfL1QgNL53hpzDXu8S4hXR5Xcnu4aiccqBwuK1lG04UzqPopR1nGi6avnhRfKWDig-3wAreko4bigRJv2w-GTw/s1600/Gray-Room--Chandelier-BHS-2.png" /></a></div>
In the end since we like the colour above the picture rail so much (Farrow & Ball Pavilion Gray) we decided to fore go wallpaper on the lower section and paint it with the matching paint as above. Once the paint was dry we just had to move the furniture into the room, all that's missing now is soft furnishings and some little ornamental things.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh02W8OX9ha_fq5mi0gAyn6dQmot2crHbgGl3R37-a-6P3_-5Qa-q4_CB7_wR9bkCabRZWWAKfYHbnGAEgGwfU4FyKtrcssQkbkwNKbDqDzzYkZoydPcGjP5xMnHx5NKWUs6fZPQPTqaHc/s1600/Gray-Room-2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh02W8OX9ha_fq5mi0gAyn6dQmot2crHbgGl3R37-a-6P3_-5Qa-q4_CB7_wR9bkCabRZWWAKfYHbnGAEgGwfU4FyKtrcssQkbkwNKbDqDzzYkZoydPcGjP5xMnHx5NKWUs6fZPQPTqaHc/s1600/Gray-Room-2.png" /></a></div>

We had a few weeks at the new house where not much visual seemed to happen but things are really ticking along now and over the next few day's I'd love to show you some pictures of the progress we've made so far and a little project we've started on some chair for the dining room.<br />
<br />
Thanks for reading!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1623979223559608797.post-2893122080839832722013-01-25T20:02:00.000+00:002013-01-25T20:02:56.674+00:00The Bathroom, the story so far... (Pic Heavy)Phew, what a busy week I've had! We're finally seeing some real progress in the house as we've been able to get some of the jobs done that make the house look prettier.<br />
<br />
The most of the week was focused on the bathrooms so I thought I'd show you the story so far of the Master Bathroom.<br />
<br />
When we purchased the property the Master Bathroom was quite a small room with a separate Toilet next door in one sense having the rooms separate seemed like a nice idea but the toilet room was absolutely freezing with no room to add heating it also did not have a sink so didn't seem like that hygienic of an option. We came to the decision that we would knock the two rooms together to make a larger space but whilst planning layouts we hit some snags. I really wanted a bath, my partner really wanted a stand alone shower but we couldn't fit both no matter how hard we tried.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1POM9N4otvXHluaBExwlsAj7RoY86WF7J8GeBE0bBK-QslavREFlSn1kGyGZGsSUuAA4kBAIIyIdkRoH2xwiFtNyelXeJTPshk8Av85AD7XcLoEcRv9SbaEHwzPLsU8Ktsjd7R75VjMk/s1600/Original+bathroom.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="215" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1POM9N4otvXHluaBExwlsAj7RoY86WF7J8GeBE0bBK-QslavREFlSn1kGyGZGsSUuAA4kBAIIyIdkRoH2xwiFtNyelXeJTPshk8Av85AD7XcLoEcRv9SbaEHwzPLsU8Ktsjd7R75VjMk/s320/Original+bathroom.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The room next door was labelled a bedroom but we didn't really need it as one and a spacious bathroom is one of those home luxuries we dream of, so we decided to extend into that room too. We've weighed up the pro's and con's and I'll admit taking away a bedroom was something we questioned a lot as to if it was the right decision, but at the end of it all this is our life house and the bathroom will be a greater benefit to us than a bedroom, we're both firm believers in do what makes you happy not do what people expect.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPeMrGHoZgGuJ8E1D50R8WNZVbSv6WGAsUGQiXV02NVbnAszHPevUIHfiFYrkp2jB4n5E-oL29mdMinI_3bs52U1uEkN6ZVI02bl95XS55mQzU6T_ALa69JXCIkPqIi14b1cCNAQyeJxw/s1600/IMG_0447.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPeMrGHoZgGuJ8E1D50R8WNZVbSv6WGAsUGQiXV02NVbnAszHPevUIHfiFYrkp2jB4n5E-oL29mdMinI_3bs52U1uEkN6ZVI02bl95XS55mQzU6T_ALa69JXCIkPqIi14b1cCNAQyeJxw/s320/IMG_0447.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The new room needed the outside wall re plastering to bring it all to the same level and a new ceiling to even out the height difference, we also built a little wall for the sinks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt5Fr_kBUDraYCHyVIKTrgvLurm8kJDguZYSeFkrJDWJmRCoe9u-5l1nQdCPwso_yxV3EeoJG9-eZOVjkXywtu9o5fMBqVkBdtOtOytjJWVXJ0grFxBV3xh8ul9f31IJAaZfyyq7FoIW8/s1600/Bathroom+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjt5Fr_kBUDraYCHyVIKTrgvLurm8kJDguZYSeFkrJDWJmRCoe9u-5l1nQdCPwso_yxV3EeoJG9-eZOVjkXywtu9o5fMBqVkBdtOtOytjJWVXJ0grFxBV3xh8ul9f31IJAaZfyyq7FoIW8/s320/Bathroom+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Once the plaster had dried which took forever, our lighting was put in <i>(I'll do another post all about recessed lighting another day since that's a huge post in it's self)</i> and we could finally get the tiler in which is when things really started to change.<br />

<br />
All that's left in there now is:<br />
<ul>
<li>2nd fix for bathroom fixtures</li>
<li>Skirting boards to be added</li>
<li>Slate wall cleaned and colour enhancer/sealant coat to be done</li>
<li>Window treatments added</li>
<li>Really, really deep clean</li>
<li>And Enjoy! </li>

The holiday season passed with a little bit of an anti-climax for us as we had hoped to be in our new home for Christmas. I had visions a me in a beautiful flaring dress carrying a big golden turkey to our fantastic dining room all dressed in Christmas finery but as you can see from the picture's posted so far that plan went very wrong. <br />
<br />
It wasn't the only thing that went against the plan, since the heating has now been off for a long time the fan decided it didn't feel like working anymore, without heating the plasterering that has been done was taking longer to dry, carpets that have been laid aren't relaxing (they'll need to be stretched when relaxed) and it's really not fun to work in temperatures below 7c. To add insult to injury the beautiful silver wallpaper we loved for our guest room just did not want to stick to the wall, there were bubbles (although bubbles is an understatement) and edges curled, if you could tame the edges then there was a very visable white joins on each and every piece so it had to come off and now we are painting instead.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj13vQOOyq8WAFV47iN2sLbqcPMuRErGqBHlt08viXARITphniX2bWynmkuCuILrkpDn_4ln6RUItRN053R4PPscPV6XP-NBKjzUV2hd53TcqDqOeQepZFevQYw-kmHISCeDIQkDeQBl7Y/s1600/IMG_0625.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj13vQOOyq8WAFV47iN2sLbqcPMuRErGqBHlt08viXARITphniX2bWynmkuCuILrkpDn_4ln6RUItRN053R4PPscPV6XP-NBKjzUV2hd53TcqDqOeQepZFevQYw-kmHISCeDIQkDeQBl7Y/s320/IMG_0625.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>sneaky peak at the bathroom.</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
So today when life after New Year's returns to normal we waited for the sun to come up (thank you insomnia) so that we could go once more unto the breach armed with paint rollers and watered down elmusion to first coat the bathroom ceiling and today finally I feel like I achieved something.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>No this isn't the latest trend in maniicure's</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Oh yeah and a little tip for the future....paint the ceiling before the lights go in because those things are almost impossible to get out and by the end of the day I feel like I've undergone a mild form of bamboo fingernail torture.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1623979223559608797.post-20955301040172413442012-12-04T20:19:00.000+00:002012-12-04T20:19:18.716+00:00Sneek Peek at the Dining RoomI just wanted to do a quick post to show you what we've been doing in the Dining room, the room had quite a large ceiling rose as well as a Picture rail and Chair rail but we decided to dress it up just a little bit more.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Original Room </i></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>

I think most people have some feature they'd really like in their homes, my other half has always wanted a decorated ceiling so taking everything back to bare bones and doing such a big renovation gave us the oppotunity to that. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2B_Js6HgYozQCsPcM3XhCsroHk9o4VfR8Eo9VPQ_k2Crp3WA8U35O1Iwm3kX-ORacysZXEF4Dc1OtRoY6Tpa8O56g61Gfhpd1RceXdqEMFwV3yotmRWxSfDoJ5VmIUHahRSUrCk7FFdw/s1600/IMG_2023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2B_Js6HgYozQCsPcM3XhCsroHk9o4VfR8Eo9VPQ_k2Crp3WA8U35O1Iwm3kX-ORacysZXEF4Dc1OtRoY6Tpa8O56g61Gfhpd1RceXdqEMFwV3yotmRWxSfDoJ5VmIUHahRSUrCk7FFdw/s320/IMG_2023.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEije_GPmivv2-OKG_-_LHFnvgtAvlGg7PkEnlk9e24wBB6Nft1cPXy3tCgZfcjE1Qcgoj2JM3Ygq3Zo6ER5XAhLifhlgUvFybnhG0BktWq1qcXYGiBEzzvEuzUUuZ2PPyhSkNlqF_DEdgI/s1600/IMG_2024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEije_GPmivv2-OKG_-_LHFnvgtAvlGg7PkEnlk9e24wBB6Nft1cPXy3tCgZfcjE1Qcgoj2JM3Ygq3Zo6ER5XAhLifhlgUvFybnhG0BktWq1qcXYGiBEzzvEuzUUuZ2PPyhSkNlqF_DEdgI/s320/IMG_2024.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And here's the finished design.....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib-K664lleY7HWGEm4dwxxswlQSu0VdAJbs6c9sr8tShemGH7IeBo6doU8dvHuqScvt0XA6Zsq7U9AVNJhmR5MPbPddJJagIvP1C6ztlHKQVvsHOMCqaJ9UXz38011NhTThMcinkY7j_s/s1600/IMG_2071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEib-K664lleY7HWGEm4dwxxswlQSu0VdAJbs6c9sr8tShemGH7IeBo6doU8dvHuqScvt0XA6Zsq7U9AVNJhmR5MPbPddJJagIvP1C6ztlHKQVvsHOMCqaJ9UXz38011NhTThMcinkY7j_s/s320/IMG_2071.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We also decided to add some panels (wainscotting) under the chair rail and even though the room is no where near finished we're already thrilled by it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLXKpiwY0tiFpQxGCjkukP0Z31mZ1AAz9WfKZF0GzKWQCloCzLBMylhGCjmC5BR-twD3KywvcUZqsVN-Y9gymIFKeQbK1Aq49It09yMk6XjAzYlFZoSHCWnYQV8njgmzxnPvtm91USHZM/s1600/IMG_2072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLXKpiwY0tiFpQxGCjkukP0Z31mZ1AAz9WfKZF0GzKWQCloCzLBMylhGCjmC5BR-twD3KywvcUZqsVN-Y9gymIFKeQbK1Aq49It09yMk6XjAzYlFZoSHCWnYQV8njgmzxnPvtm91USHZM/s320/IMG_2072.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

Is there a dream feature you'd love for your house? Are you lucky enough to already have it? Let me know in the comments.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1623979223559608797.post-51829804568334875802012-11-30T01:08:00.000+00:002012-11-30T01:08:44.417+00:00The Midnight Saga Part 3The saga of the Navy Blue paint seems to have more episodes and drama than the Twilight Saga so despite finally choosing a <a href="http://illtakebothinteriors.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/dreaming-of-midnight-part-2.html" target="_blank">colour</a> the universe conspired to throw a spanner in the works and Fountains Blue was not to be.<br />
<br />
I had to order the Fired Earth Fountains Blue paint since the store did not stock this colour and when I went to collect it something did not sound right, the paint seemed very watery I could hear it sloshing all the way to the car. On to the room to be painted, lift off the lid and we were greeted with this<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihz_y-y56hU_1n4Dl6SuMhyv96VR2hgaUa3sqf4qSe-LGM39Ew3xdh7cELfmm3GU3TodDk8QKFTMauBp11yitelFY2ZmI-WmXMoKuW4GEGQOb5D_Qu-E5vooXpH3JrZ1W4WK-4DhtXyWY/s1600/IMG_2019.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihz_y-y56hU_1n4Dl6SuMhyv96VR2hgaUa3sqf4qSe-LGM39Ew3xdh7cELfmm3GU3TodDk8QKFTMauBp11yitelFY2ZmI-WmXMoKuW4GEGQOb5D_Qu-E5vooXpH3JrZ1W4WK-4DhtXyWY/s320/IMG_2019.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>Dry sample to the right, wet sample on the bottom, mystery paint on top</i></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Even though the dark sample above is wet the colour which is practically black did not change when it was dry it also developed a really oily residue, not a good look on a matt paint, clearly something had gone wrong and to top off it off we were now on a bit of a time crunch as we needed to get two coats on the walls before the carpet arrived, re-ordering was not option.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYUPgACC_ChxeMljufCo861wMc4k7D10V-RpZOvEGC9eauU4cKGDmQEYn5CtHKznO6E6yQbet7Jv1SzXIgopOEDePeAsh_q_NcRcW02ITUzsTUMoSD31dgI5xlD_wdaF9j_fC2GS8Od8Y/s1600/IMG_2020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYUPgACC_ChxeMljufCo861wMc4k7D10V-RpZOvEGC9eauU4cKGDmQEYn5CtHKznO6E6yQbet7Jv1SzXIgopOEDePeAsh_q_NcRcW02ITUzsTUMoSD31dgI5xlD_wdaF9j_fC2GS8Od8Y/s320/IMG_2020.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
Farrow & Ball to the rescue! Armed with sample pots of Drawing Room Blue and Hague Blue it was back to the nest to re-chose my problem blue. In the end there was a winner in Hague Blue, we did encounter a few more hiccups on the way but we made the deadline and today the carpet went down on time. Farrow & Ball were a tremendous help and I'm incredibly happy with the end result just going to show you things really do happen for a reason.<br />

Then because I was almost constantly discussing rooms and showing my other half pics to help keep them straight conversations almost always started with <i>"you know that gray room"</i> we decided that the spare guest room should have a neutral hotel feel to it and <i>that gray room</i> was just perfect so the spare room in our home became known as The Gray room. Now whenever you lose someone or something it's so much easier<br />
<br />

Next step was the white coat for the ceiling, coving, picture rail and woodwork and the followed up with the first part of the gray makeover.<br />
<br />
We've choosen a wallpaper for the main body of the walls but the picture rail section is painted, it did take a little while and quite a few samples to find a perfect gray as a lot looked too blue in the room but in the end Farrow & Ball's Pavillion Gray was perfect so with two coats on the wall that's where we are today.<br />

However the good news is that I have actually found a paint, I know amazing right.<br />
<br />
So the paint in question? Fired Earth's Fountains Blue <br />

Described as:<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
A strong blue but at the same time, quiet and tranquil, like the ruins of Fountains Abbey in the twilight. </blockquote>
Fountains Blue definitely has a purple base colour, in fact it looked so purple when I first painted the sample I dismissed it. However once it dried it darkened down and more of the bluey tones came out. It's not the same as Midnight, it's definitely more purple but it does have that dark night sky look I was looking for. Visitors seem determined to give me a heart attack in there as every person I've spoke to so far has reached out a hand and made a move to lean on the freshly plastered slightly damp walls (que my movie style slow motion <i>"NOOOOOOOOOOO"</i>)<br />

The second leap in progress in there is that we now have power and lights! Switching on the lights in a room you've had no power in for months is a great moment and really helps bring the room to life even though there's no furniture in there. Power cables have also been run through to the island area so the next step is to get the screed done to level out the floor ready for dressing up.<br />

As always there is a catch and that is that the perfect navy blue is REALLY hard to find.<br />
<br />
Six sample pots later I found the perfect blue by the name of Midnight by Homebase Sanctuary, it's perfect and as I discovered today it's also discontinued.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So with this news off to Homebase I went armed with my large painted sample to see if Dulux they can colour match, sadly the colour machine could not match my gorgeous Midnight shade but by comparing the colour cards I think I have a couple of candidates for my new perfect navy.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNAag1EJU0pXXR-6UUa-bDZkAnuqI8GG_ftx9i72xcEyZaDei7hZrt_u1jebaGDUINsHVv2Oc1PjQCtsutI6fJ6WxMmIKbwsjUd-p2oHmLEikVaTgPLjx7URMZJBKMTydIY2F2kDKUxSU/s1600/Kitchen+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNAag1EJU0pXXR-6UUa-bDZkAnuqI8GG_ftx9i72xcEyZaDei7hZrt_u1jebaGDUINsHVv2Oc1PjQCtsutI6fJ6WxMmIKbwsjUd-p2oHmLEikVaTgPLjx7URMZJBKMTydIY2F2kDKUxSU/s320/Kitchen+1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
In the beginning the kitchen was a small cramped L-shaped area with every square inch clad in knotty pine and I'm literally talking every where...ceiling, walls, cupboards, the place looked more like a sauna than a kitchen. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the kitchen before we started stripping it out as we were quite eager to make a start.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS_pnK5_9Pg5GAqD3PTOFJwBSbSXCxUFAKnaQ4b5v7jMFvXdDux2J4VUmkZHB2lPECJiRiCieTvBxZxp0kM7IwSC6zUhikE4x_UqWk4kb81gikC_oPm8gpj2yqWYkn7eAudU4XRnki9ZU/s1600/Kitchen+(22).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS_pnK5_9Pg5GAqD3PTOFJwBSbSXCxUFAKnaQ4b5v7jMFvXdDux2J4VUmkZHB2lPECJiRiCieTvBxZxp0kM7IwSC6zUhikE4x_UqWk4kb81gikC_oPm8gpj2yqWYkn7eAudU4XRnki9ZU/s320/Kitchen+(22).jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Behind the cladding revealed some really scary electrical diy work and some slightly unstable walls between the next two rooms (corridor and toilet/shower room) so it was time to bring in the professionals.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ7GZUIkzIKdzZxSeENKEqoaxlvTY2SZcLmQgQAPTl0bXRQw9E-qPqg2X-iVX8zfhW-YEIQAsQSYedaX6DC66TGkGdt-Mp6k5GxY2_xWFSU1VvajoHKptRXnE-LrFM6ISdTj2VXe5VnNo/s1600/Kitchen+(8).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ7GZUIkzIKdzZxSeENKEqoaxlvTY2SZcLmQgQAPTl0bXRQw9E-qPqg2X-iVX8zfhW-YEIQAsQSYedaX6DC66TGkGdt-Mp6k5GxY2_xWFSU1VvajoHKptRXnE-LrFM6ISdTj2VXe5VnNo/s320/Kitchen+(8).jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
Since we planned on making changes to the existing bathroom (more on that another time) we decided that having a large downstairs toilet and shower was a little unnecessary and moved the downstairs toilet to the space under the stairs, the corridor was to become a laundry room and the old bathroom a built in banquette for the kitchen. Once the unstable walls came down it would have been a crime to but them back up and so the plan changed and the final kitchen shape was boarded out ready for plastering.<br />

The plastering should be all finished on Monday I can't wait to see it finished.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1623979223559608797.post-71305216361088254742012-11-10T16:24:00.000+00:002012-11-10T16:24:22.772+00:00There's no place like homeWelcome to I'll Take Both Interiors! Much like it's sister blog <a href="http://www.illtakeboth.com/" target="_blank">I'll Take Both</a> this blog was born out of love and interest in a subject. My interest in interiors developed in the last year when my partner and I decided to move home, a couple of failed purchases later we final completed on our life house.<br />
I know the "everything happens for a reason" line is a bit of a cliche but in this instance it's true if those earlier contracts hadn't fallen through we'd have missed out on a house which is truly better than those that came before, so if you're going through the trials of home buying keep your head up it'll all work out in the end.<br />

Our new nest is a four storey Victorian in need of a little love and care to bring it up to date. We got the keys in April and since then we've started a massive renovation, I'll Take Both Interiors will chronicle the renovation, show our design ideas and I'll try to the explain the thought processes behind them but don't be surprised if you find the odd shopping post thrown in after all I didn't get the motto "I'll Take Both" for nothing.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
